SSSO

Sydney Schools Symphony Orchestra – these were some of the best times of my life!

In high school I got to go to the State Music Camp and wow what an experience. That is where I met Mal Hewitt – a truly inspiring and awesome man. He made music fun but more than that he knew how to get the best out of us as musicians by believing in us.

His belief in us made us believe in ourselves!

I remember playing the 5th movement of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony at the final Choral Concert of my high school years. As a trombonist it was an awesome piece to play. As a high school orchestra it was an extraordinary work to play. so extraordinary that some of the brass section from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra came to see us because they couldn’t believe a group of school kids could pull it off.

I will always remember with enormous pride the standing ovation that those musicians gave us.

Another great SSSO memory was the 40th reunion of the Choral Concerts. It was an epic event so full of memories shared – with so many still active in music either teaching or playing.

Again if I manage to track down any photos from this time I will post them here.
