Musician
‘If music be the food of love: Play on”
Musician? Not really appropriate these days. I know my Facebook friends and anyone who’s received a sung birthday message will agree I am not a singer!
Growing up I didn’t consider myself to be a musician either. However back then I at least played music. My trombone put me through uni!
As an adult I realise not everyone has been lucky enough to experience what I have through music. Luckily I won 2 free organ lessons in a colouring contest back in 1975 and my grandfather bought the family an organ for Christmas. (Funnier now I guess nobody plays the organ!!)
In high school, after changing schools in the final term of my first year I took up the trombone – as a joke. See everyone else had established friendship groups and as an outsider I just needed an activity to be involved. The school needed a trombonist and the rest shall we say is history! Some joke – you could say the joke was on me!
Whilst I am not a musician I did get to play with Sydney Schools Symphony Orchestra (SSSO) and SBS Youth Orchestra (SBSYO) in it’s inaugural year and for these experiences I feel very privileged. There is an awesome excitement playing in the Opera House or the Town Hall.
